My Name is Teryn O'Brien. I'm a writer, editor, and photographer that is located in the Greater NYC/Hudson Valley area of New York. I also do some work in Colorado and travel to the West/Southwest often.
A Storyteller for businesses and individuals. That's my business slogan because I believe in the power of storytelling to truly touch and impact people's lives. Storytelling is the foundation for building bridges between a customer and business, between individuals in society, and between nations and the world. I write and take photos for magazines and newspapers, as well as numerous companies and individuals, to tell stories in a variety of high quality ways. I also help authors take their books to the next level through developmental editing and proofreading to make sure their stories are compelling and error-free.
With over 8 years of professional writing, editing, and photography experience, I can bring quality to anyone's storytelling needs—whether you are a business looking to hire for new website marketing writing or photography, a magazine wanting top notch articles, an individual looking for portraits or wedding photography, or an author needing help with your book.
Check out my writing samples page or my photography galleries for more comprehensive examples of my professional work. My home page also has some of my favorite projects highlighted on it, so scroll through those examples to get an idea of who I am and what I can do.

Writing & Editing
From a young age, I was writing novels and poetry, weaving stories for my sister during bedtime, creating plays with neighborhood kids. An avid bookworm growing up, stories became my refuge, helping me to learn empathy see others as protagonists in their lives. Pursuing that love of stories, it was only natural that I graduated from a small private college in downtown Chicago with a degree in communications.
After college, I moved to Colorado and found what I thought was my dream job working in online marketing at Penguin Random House—one of the Big Six in publishing. There, I learned even more about high-quality storytelling. As I soaked in the wisdom of the editors I befriended—participating in meetings where books were dissected and developed with the precision of a surgeon's scalpel—I honed in on what it meant to position, brand, and market through stories.
My love for written stories gradually translated into a love for the power of visual storytelling as well, and I picked up a camera post-college. Photography taught me that capturing the personality, tone, and vibe of a person or place was another way of seeing a scene, imagining a journey, and narrating a character.
Photography helped real life stories enfold in a vibrant, passionate, dramatic, beautiful way—and my delight came from catching a moment that would be forever now immortalized in a photo. Finding ways to see people in their element, to see a business's cherished space, to see an important event as it enfolds: that's the power of visual storytelling. I was hooked.
The Formation of Teryn O'Brien Creative
Due to several unpredictable twists in my own story, I had to quit my dream job in publishing and embarked upon my own entrepreneurial journey in 2015. I now write, edit, and take photos for a living. Although the journey has been tough at points, it has also been one of the most rewarding journeys I have ever embarked upon.
In the past few years, I've been the coproducer of a music video; the photographer and writer for newspapers and magazines, individuals, and businesses; a poet who has had work performed all across the country at art galleries, podcasts, and YouTube channels; and the managing editor of an amazing publication called Colorado Collective.
I moved to New York in 2018, continuing my freelance career—as well as an entirely new entrepreneurial journey through teaching yoga in the Orange County area. We’ll see what the future has in store…
